The pending perjury trial of three retired Philadelphia police detectives could prove an exception, if they themselves are not cleared by alleged mistakes by District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office. Former detectives Martin Devlin, Manuel Santiago and Frank Jastrzembski have asked a judge to dismiss the case. That trial testimony was still fair game when Krasner, a civil rights lawyer focused on criminal justice reform, took office in 2018. He charged the Wright detectives in 2021, days before the five-year deadline expired. Last year, a mistake by prosecutors sank a police perjury case in Manhattan, when a judge halted the trial over their failure to turn over evidence to the defense.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans in Wisconsin are threatening to impeach a recently elected state Supreme Court justice and raised the possibility of doing the same to the state’s election director. A Georgia Republican called for impeaching the Fulton County prosecutor who brought racketeering charges against former President Donald Trump. None of the targets met the bar traditionally set for impeachment — credible allegations of committing a crime while in office. Over the past two years, Republicans also have sought to pry Democrats and nonpartisan executives from office through recalls, legislative maneuvers and forced removals, even when no allegations of wrongdoing have surfaced. They’re upset with her over a legal settlement as voting began in 2020 that eased some rules for mailed ballots during the COVID-19 pandemic beyond what state law permitted.

Following her arrest, Hudson's family contacted law enforcement in both Texas and Philadelphia in a bid to clear her name. The Harris County District Attorney's Office in Texas said that after learning about what happened it dismissed the case "within five minutes," citing insufficient evidence. “We accept charges based on the sworn evidence presented to us by law enforcement,” a spokesperson for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office wrote in a statement to NBC Philadelphia. In a statement Thursday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner apologized for Hudson's ordeal. “The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office became aware of Julie Hudson’s predicament last evening, thanks in part to media reports out of Houston and in Philly,” Krasner wrote.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has framed the impeachment move as an effort to nullify the will of voters. The Pennsylvania Senate on Wednesday indefinitely postponed the impeachment trial of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner , adding new uncertainty to an effort by Republicans in the state legislature to remove the city prosecutor. The House in November voted 107-85 to impeach Mr. Krasner, a twice-elected Democrat whose liberal policies Republicans blame for fueling record levels of violent crime in Philadelphia since the start of the pandemic. The Senate trial had been set to start Jan. 18.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, re-elected last year to a second four-year term, is one of several liberal prosecutors who have taken office around the U.S. in recent years. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner asked a state court to halt the impeachment proceedings that could result in his removal from office, as the Republican-led Pennsylvania Senate prepares to put the twice-elected prosecutor on trial next month. Mr. Krasner, a Democrat, claimed in a lawsuit filed Friday that none of the seven impeachment articles approved by the House last month allege “misbehavior in office” within the meaning of the state Constitution, and that the legislature lacks authority to impeach him. The suit also said the Nov. 16 House vote is void because it came during a two-year session that ended Nov. 30.
The Pennsylvania House is poised to impeach Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner , as Republican legislators push to remove the twice-elected prosecutor whose progressive policies they blame for fueling record levels of violent crime in the city. The Republican-led House, using a simple majority, could impeach Mr. Krasner, a Democrat, as early as Wednesday morning. If it does, the next step would be a trial in the GOP-led state Senate. Conviction and removal from office would require a two-thirds majority. It is unclear when a trial might be held.

Progressive district attorneys have presided over a resurgence in urban crime, and the demand for a political correction is rising. The latest DA in the dock is Philadelphia’s Larry Krasner , and on Wednesday Republicans in the state House filed articles of impeachment against him. Mr. Krasner won election in 2017 with the help of George Soros , and crime has surged on his watch. On Monday a bipartisan House committee faulted the district attorney and his policies for contributing to “a catastrophic rise in violent crime at the expense of public safety.”
Republicans in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives filed articles of impeachment Wednesday against Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner , saying the twice-elected prosecutor should be removed from office because his progressive policies have fueled record levels of violent crime in the country’s sixth-most populous city. Mr. Krasner, one of several so-called “progressive prosecutors” who have taken office in recent years, decried the filing in a series of Twitter posts. The move is “devastating to democracy, and it shows how far toward fascism the Republican party is creeping. These Republicans divest from communities and then grandstand about crime for political gain,” he said in a tweet.
WASHINGTON — Pennsylvania Republicans announced Wednesday plans to impeach and potentially remove from office Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, a national leader among progressive prosecutors who was overwhelmingly re-elected last year. It also comes as progressive prosecutors and recent criminal justice reforms have faced blowback due to rising crime. Republicans control both chambers of the Legislature, but White is the only GOP member from Philadelphia, which is on pace to break last year’s record-setting homicide rate. Pennsylvania’s Constitution gives the Legislature broad power to impeach “all civil officers” for “any misbehavior in office,” though it has almost never exercised that authority. As with the federal impeachment process, a simple majority vote of the state House is needed to impeach.
